A collection of 36 letters written by Lt Col Francis Aylmer Maxwell, The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment) some original and some copy letters. The first letter being from Francis Maxwell to his Mother in 1901 regarding his Victoria Cross during the Second Boer War (1899-1902.) Most of the remaining letters are from Francis Maxwell to his wife, Charlotte Maxwell about his time on the Western Front during World War One (1914-1918) whilst commanding the Middlesex Regiment. They are handwritten copies made by her. The letters from the Western Front include details about day to day life and battles that he has fought in, including an extract from his final letter to his wife. The collection of letters also include a handwritten letter from Francis Maxwell to his sister Nina Maxwell as well a copy of the speech of David Maxwell at his brother's funeral. Archives 1974-02-31
