Diary in seven bound manuscript volumes of Col J B Backhouse, 2nd Bn 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs), 1 Feb 1874 to 27 Apr 1911. Commissioned in May 1872 Backhouse served with the Buffs until his retirement in July 1904, assuming command of the 2nd Bn in October 1900. He was stationed in Ireland (1874-76;1892-98), Mauritius (1876-78), Singapore (1880-82), Egypt (1885-86), England (1886-92), and saw active service in the Zulu War and the Boer War.
