Manuscript standing orders, 1797; associated with 10th (or Prince of Wales's Own) Regiment of Light Dragoons; compiled by Lt Col Cartwright and issued at Guildford Barracks, 1797; bound in book form; the day to day life of the regiment was governed by its standing orders, this copy was either compiled by or formerly in the possession of Ambrose Goddard, a captain in the 10th Light Dragoons who was subsequently MP for Cricklade. Two guidons, 1795-1796; First or King's Guidon; associated with 21st Light Dragoons; scarlet with buff design; Second or Regimental Guidon; associated with 31st Light Dragoons; buff with scarlet design; the term 'guidon' is a corruption of the old French 'guyd homme', the leader of a group of horsemen. In the seventeenth century each troop of cavalry had its own guidon but by the latter part of the eighteenth century each regiment usually carried between two and four guidons irrespective of the number of troops.
