Stick barometer, nd; mahogany and boxwood travelling barometer used by the Duke of Wellington throughout the Peninsular War; manufactured by Berge, London; a brass plate records that it was later given by Wellington to Commodore Sir George Collier who had served with the fleet co-operating with the Army along the Spanish coast; weather is a very important factor in warfare, bad weather affects the performance of weapons as well as the morale of troops, in addition poor visibility can lead to disaster; at the Battle of Albuera driving rain hid four regiments of French cavalry from view, enabling them to surprise a British infantry brigade and cut it to pieces. Cannister shot, 1811; with wooden box; shot that wounded Lt Col William Inglis at the Battle of Albuera, 16 May 1811; during the battle Beresford's army of Spanish, Portuguese and British troops came under a massive flanking attack by a French force under Marshal Soult. A storm of shot tore into the British ranks and the 57th Regiment suffered particularly severely; Lt Col Inglis was hit by this shot which pierced his left breast and lodged in his back; Inglis remained with the Regiment's colours, encouraging his men. The Battle of Vittoria; coloured etched caricature by and after George Cruikshank; published by Thomas Tegg, London, 7 Jul 1813; Wellington's victory at Vittoria brought about the final downfall of French rule in Spain. Joseph Bonaparte narrowly escaped capture and can be seen fleeing to France at the top right of the picture. Nearly all the French Army's baggage and artillery fell into British hands. The victory would have been even more conclusive had not many British soldiers abandoned the pursuit to indulge in an orgy of looting. Prints 1984-06-38
