The 3rd Madras Regiment was formed in 1922 from a number of Carnatic Infantry regiments that had all served in the Middle East during World War One (1914-1918) and the immediate post-war period. However, the regiment was disbanded in 1928 and reconstituted in 1941, with sixteen battalions raised during World War Two (1939-1945). In October 1945 the infantry regiments (except the Punjab Regiments) lost the number from their regimental designations. As a result, the 3rd Madras Regiment became the Madras Regiment. With the Partition of India in 1947, the regiment became part of the Indian Army.
