The 33rd Madras Regiment of Native Infantry was formed in 1824 from the 1st Battalion, 17th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry, originally raised in 1800. It became the 33rd Madras Infantry in 1885 and the 3rd Burma Infantry in 1890. In 1891 the unit was renamed 33rd Regiment (3rd Burma Battalion) Madras Infantry. Reform of the Indian Army in 1901 and 1903 resulted in the regiment being renamed the 33rd Burma Infantry and 93rd Burma Infantry Regiment respectively. In 1922 the unit formed the 5th Battalion of the 8th Punjab Regiment.
