Button, 18th (The Alipore) Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry, 1864-1885

Large, gilt button by Jennens and Company, London, with regimental number, '18', in centre, within a circlet bearing the unit title, 'Alipore Regiment', within a wreath, and surmounted by Queen Victoria's crown.

The 18th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry was disbanded as it took part in the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). The number was reallocated to the former Alipore Regiment in 1861. It became the 18th (The Alipore) Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry in 1864 and the 18th Regiment of Bengal Infantry in 1885. In 1902 it was renamed the 18th Musulman Rajput Infantry, and the 18th Infantry in 1903. The regiment was amalgamated with other units in 1922, and became the 4th Battalion, 9th Jat Regiment.
