The 12th Frontier Force Regiment was formed in 1922 drawing on elements of the Punjab Irregular Force. It comprised of four regular battalions drawn from Sikh regiments and a fifth regular battalion and a 10th (training) battalion formed from the two infantry battalions of the Corps of Guides. Further battalions were raised during World War Two (1939-1945). In 1945 the unit was renamed the Frontier Force Regiment.
