Button, 29th (Punjab) Regiment Bengal Infantry, 1885-1901

Small, bi-metal button with the regimental number, '29', surmounted by an Imperial crown.

The regiment was originally raised as the Jullundur Punjab Battalion or 21st Regiment of Punjab Infantry in 1857. It was renamed in 1861 as the 26th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry and then the 33rd Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry. In 1864 it became the 29th (Punjab) Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry, losing the word 'Native' from its title in 1885. It's title was shortened again in 1901, becoming the 29th Punjab Infantry. With the further reform of the Indian Army in 1903, the regiment was renamed the 29th Punjabis. The regiment served in East Africa and the Middle East during World War One (1914-1918). In 1922 it formed the 10th (Training) Battalion of the 15th Punjab Regiment.
