Pugri badge, 7th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry, pre-1885
Silver and gilt badge with regimental number, in Roman numerals, 'VII', within a garter bearing the title 'Bombay Native Infantry', surmounted by an Imperial Crown, within a wreath with scrolls bearing the battle honours, Seedaseer', 'Seringapatam' and Beni Boo Ali'.
The pugri or pagri is a form of headdress.
The regiment originated as the 4th Battalion Bombay Sepoys in the Bombay Army of the East India Company. In 1824 the unit became the 7th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry, dropping the title 'Native' in 1885. In 1900 the regiment was renamed the 7th Bombay Infantry (Pioneers)| and, with the reform of the Indian Army, became the 107th Pioneers in 1903. In 1922, with the amalgamation of Indian Army pioneer units, it formed the 1st Battalion, 2nd Bombay Pioneers.
The battle honours on this badge refer to the unit's service during the 4th Mysore War in 1799 (Seringapatam and Seedaseer) and the Persian Gulf Expedition (Bani Bu Ali expedition) of 1821.
