The 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 153rd Punjabis were raised in Mesopotamia and Palestine in the last year of the First World War (1914-1918). The regiment was formed from drafts from existing Indian Army regiments in order to replace British units transferred to the Western Front. The Regiment saw action at the Battle of Megiddo. On their return to India the 1st and 2nd Battalions served in the 3rd Afghan War (1919). The two battalions were disbanded in 1921.
