Shoulder title, Bombay Volunteer Rifle Corps, 1877-1917

White metal badge made by J H Johnson and Company, Aligarh, United Provinces, in the form of the initials 'V.R', over the curved title, 'Bombay'.

The Bombay Volunteer Rifle Corps was reformed in 1877. Rules of the Corps stated that volunteers should be British or Eurasian, respectable and 'of good character', and, unless joining as cadets, should be aged 16 years or older and of a height of 5 foot 2 inches or above. The unit became the 16th Bombay Battalion in 1917 and was then renamed the Bombay Battalion in 1920.
