Helmet badge, Cawnpore Rifle Volunteers, 1877-1901
White metal badge with the figure of a winged angel holding palm fronds, within an open garter, bearing the inscription, 'Cawnpore Rifle Volunteers', surmounted by a Guelphic Crown.
The Cawnpore Rifle Volunteers was an auxiliary unit raised in 1877. The angel depicted on the badge is derived from the memorial created by the Italian sculptor Baron Carlo Marochetti (1805-1867) at the site of the Cawnpore massacre which took place during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859).
