Cap badge, Cawnpore Rifle Volunteers, 1901-1947
White metal badge with the figure of a winged angel holding palm fronds, within a wreath, with a scroll bearing the inscription, 'Defence Not Defiance', surmounted by a crown.
The Cawnpore Rifle Volunteers was an auxiliary unit raised in 1877. The angel depicted on the badge is derived from the memorial created by the Italian sculptor Baron Carlo Marochetti (1805-1867) at the site of the Cawnpore massacre which took place during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859).
