Helmet badge, 2nd Punjab Rifle Volunteers, 1881-1901
Brass badge in the form of an eight-pointed star surmounted by a crown. Central unit numeral within a circlet bearing the title, 'Punjab Rifle Volunteers', with wreath and scroll bearing the title, 'Simla', and the motto, 'In Defence'.
The 2nd Punjab (Simla) Rifle Volunteers was raised in 1861 and was renamed the Simla Volunteer Rifles in 1904. The Quarterly Civil List for the Punjab records the enrolled strength of seven companies on 15 September 1898 as 381 men with 45 men in reserve.
