Letter from Lieutenant Standish O'Grady to his father the 1st Viscount Guillamore, 25 June 1815
In this letter, sent from a village near Cambrai, O'Grady recounts his experience at the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815. He refers to the battle as our 'Glorious Victory' but a 'sanguinary contest'. O'Grady tells that his regiment, the 7th Light Dragoons, suffered serious losses during the battle, with only four officers able to do service by the end. He mentions his colleague Captain William Verner was wounded by a musket ball. O'Grady does not expect there to be any more fighting.
From a collection of 45 letters associated with Lieutenant-Colonel Standish O'Grady, later 2nd Viscount Guillamore 1813-1830. These include those written whilst serving as a lieutenant with the 7th Light Dragoons in the Peninsular War (1808-1814) and at Waterloo (1815).
