Uniform of a Major General of Light Dragoons, 1812

Aquatint by J C Stadler after Charles Hamilton Smith, 1812.

Major-generals usually commanded brigade size formations. At Waterloo (1815) for example, the 4th Cavalry Brigade, consisting of the 11th, 12th and 16th Light Dragoons, was commanded by Major-General Sir John Vandeleur.

From Charles Hamilton Smith's 'Costumes of the Army of the British Empire, according to the last regulations 1812', published by Colnaghi and Company, 1812-1815.
