The 12th Frontier Force Regiment was a British Indian Army unit formed in 1922 from the amalgamation of the 51st The Prince of Wales's Own Sikhs, 52nd, 53rd and 54th Sikhs and two infantry battalions from the Corps of Guides. The 53rd Sikhs formed the 3rd Battalion and became the 3rd Royal Battalion (Sikhs) 12th Frontier Force Regiment in 1935.

During World War Two (1939-1945), the 3rd Royal Battalion (Sikhs) was part of the 5th Indian Infantry Division and served in the East Africa and Western Desert campaigns. The battalion, detached from the main force, was largely destroyed at El Adem in Libya on 15 June 1942. It was later reformed in Egypt before being transferred into the 4th Indian Infantry Division.
