The Bengal Nagpur Railway Volunteer Corps was an auxiliary unit formed in 1888. In 1898 it amalgamated with the Orissa Volunteer Rifles. In 1903 two battalions were formed. In 1917 the unit became the 36th Bengal Nagpur Railway Regiment. In 1920 the regiment became the Bengal Nagpur Railway Regiment, and the Bengal Nagpur Railway Battalion in 1933.
