Shabraque badge associated with Major Thomas Everard Hutton, 4th (Queen's Own) Light Dragoons, 1854 (c)
Many of the cavalry regiments destined for the Crimean War (1854-1856) decided to leave behind their shabraques, the horse cloth under the saddle, and Hutton's ornate shabraque badges, worn at the fore corners, would not have seen active service.
Hutton took part in the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava (1854). He was shot through the right thigh during the advance of the Light Cavalry Brigade, and on returning from the guns he was again severely wounded through the left thigh.
