Bit bridoon, 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Dragoon Guards, used by Captain Lawrence Oates, 1910 (c)

The bosses on this bridoon are of the 5th Dragoon Guards but Captain Oates, to whom they belonged, was never in that regiment. He served with the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons.

Captain Lawrence Edward Grace Oates (1880-1912) was a member of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1912) to Antarctica. He famously walked to his death in a blizzard to try and save his comrades, as he was slowing down their return from the South Pole due to ill health. Oates' last words were: 'I am going out, I may be some time'.
